Chairman’s Christmas Message

Men and Women of Belsize

There is one more weekend of rugby until the short mid season break for Christmas. At this time of year I usually send a message outlining our recent achievements, and highlighting how in the past months we have reached heights never previously dreamed of. This is no longer the case.

As you will all know, on the pitch our success continues, with all league teams doing very well and either leading or pushing for the top. As these are leagues we have never reached before this is superb, but instead of these being achievements that we never thought we could achieve, these are now things that we have come to expect. Our expectations have been raised again and again, and every victory in the past few years has been built upon to the point where we all wake in the morning expecting to win, not hoping.

The same is true off the pitch, both on the financial and social sides, where we are stronger than we have ever been.

This isn’t to suggest that there should be any room for complacency, as success on and off the pitch is the product of hard work. It simply means that we can all relax this Christmas, and enjoy a few drinks and a bit of cake, in the knowledge that the graft is paying off.

It also means that we can come back in the New Year, energised for the fight and ready to tackle the challenges that a club of our size, and current stature, face. The massive target we have painted on our backs is one. More hard work, and the confidence in our ability that it has engendered, means that this should be a small mountain to climb and that more laurels await us in April.

Let’s therefore do all we can to ensure that we get to have another massive club day in April to celebrate the effort that everyone has put in. A smaller group will then jet off to represent Belsize at the frontier of world class touring, as always. I believe there are some cricketers joining us in Barbados so not only the pride of our club but the pride of our sport will urge us to win that particular party.

Thank you all for the effort and dedication you have shown to Belsize in 2014. Have a happy Christmas and New Year.

Pre-Season Training – Getting Involved

We are now entering August and our first competitive matches are in this month. So, we have one month to be ready.
Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Regents Park. Many players are attending only one session a week. Many regulars from last season have not made an appearance at all. This is disappointing.
We have a large number of new players who need welcoming, who need to train alongside established players in order to gauge the standard of the club, and who need to be brought up to speed with club playing culture and structure. By staying away, you are not helping your own cause, nor the club cause.
We have a pool of talented coaches who are trying to structure sessions to accommodate numbers, raise standards, and still have a laugh. There are minor, but important developments to the playing structure this season; we cannot begin to train this until everyone is present.
Primrose Hill SprintFor everyone who is training regularly, you can already look back on a few weeks of dustbowl rugby, Michael’s absolute killer first session, Primrose Hill, first contact and Dav’s wicked switch from the wing on Thursday evening. Leapfrog will never be the same and having 50 guys roll around on the floor wrestling nearly drew a crowd.
Pre-season is important for your fitness and for your rugby skill level. It’s a physical and emotional investment in the bank for when the weather’s cold and you wonder why you do it. But, most of all, it sets our stall out for  the kind of club we want to be in 2014/15.

International Tour 2015 – Barbados

BarbadosAfter the huge success of the recent tour in May, with 50 tourists visiting Portugal and strong tours to Malta, Berlin and Croatia, the club has decided 2015 is the year to escape Europe…
Five years have passed since we ventured overseas and we think it’s time to go big with Belsize.

Our proposed destination for May 2015 is … Barbados. With excellent local knowledge provided by Club VP Alex Upton, we are offering 8 nights in the Caribbean (+1 on the flight home) for £1,000 each.
The planned dates are departing 30th April and a 9th May 2015 arrival home.

This total includes:

  • Return flights
  • 8 nights accommodation
  • 2 x games
  • Playing insurance
  • Tour stash
  • 3 excursions, likely to be:
    • Sailing party cruise
    • Rum distillery tour & lunch
    • 4×4 island safari
  • Help arranging activities for smaller groups like diving, water sports, golf, etc

As the cost of flights are included, we will need to book those ASAP so we are announcing tour early to to allow plenty of time for you all to consider your chances of going, and start saving from July’s pay packet and also discuss at the AGM on 4th August.

The cost includes return flights and we have plans to help make this trip achievable to as many people as possible. It is also exceptionally good value and we doubt you could ever go to Barbados with your mates for less.
The intended payment plan/guideline is as follows:

  • £160 deposit by end of August 2014
  • £320 by end of Nov 2014 (£480 minimum required by this date)
  • £320 by end of Feb 2015 (£800 total required by this date)
  • £200 two weeks before tour departs (totalling £1,000)

The club website will be set up to allow payments using your debit or credit cards to our Paypal account.

Given the additional logistics of taking a big group to the Caribbean, we need to ensure the interest is there before planning goes any further so please complete this form if you are keen for over a week of golden sands, rum, ice cold Banks beer, snorkelling, rum, Rhianna doppelgängers (not guaranteed), reggae, rum and rugby with your mates.

Please note: As of August 6, tour is SOLD OUT.

2018 Belsize Tour - Registration of Interest
To put your name down to become a tourist on the 2018 Tour to Mozambique & Swaziland as a new joiner to the club this season, please complete the below form.

Doesn't matter if you are the first to sign up if you are the last to pay... If you are successful, the payment deadlines would be as follows -

- £199 immediately confirmation of a place. Deadline is 6 Oct (assuming space is available through to that date)
- Interim #1 £450 - 30 Nov 17 (or total £649 minimum by 30 Nov if paying on a different schedule e.g monthly)
- Interim #2 £450 - 2 Feb 18 (total £1099 minimum by 2 Feb if paying on a different schedule e.g monthly)
- Balance £200 - 23 March 18 (total £1299).
- you can also sign up for monthly DD payments.

Our aim is to have the tour party then work together to generate additional income through fund-raising nights and extra sponsorship. That extra income could then be used to reduce the total cost to the tourists (potentially making that final £200 payment redundant) or, more likely, add greater value to the trip through trips, stash & meals as well as be the basis of the club kitty whilst away, reducing your personal expenditure on tour.

This is obviously not guaranteed but is a good incentive to have the group work together over the season to make the tour as affordable as possible and contribute to the experience when enjoying sun, safari and rugby.

2014-15 Season Kicks Off!

The 2014/15 season kicks off Tomorrow at 18:30 in Regent’s Park. Pre-season training will be a mix of fitness, skills and rugby, taking place every Tuesday and Thursday until September at 6.30pm. We will have a team of coaches present, including fitness specialists.

Our summer training location is now between London Zoo and the Gloucester Gate entrance to the park, marked on this link as ‘Summer Training

Arrive changed or get changed by the side of the pitch. Bring water! Footwear for the time being is trainers.

Two Crucial Things:

1. Whoever arrives first, claim our space to train and mark it out with cones or anything to hand. Timing is crucial; If you think you can arrive a little earlier to do this on either Tuesday or Thursday, please let me know on 07950 257802.

2. Volunteers needed to collect the two bags of balls and ladders, etc from the Sheephaven and drop them over to the pitch. For early sessions we just need the two big bags, but they are not light to carry. Please let me know if you can help on either Tuesday or Thursday. In an emergency, I believe the Club will reimburse taxi fares.

With work commitments, holidays etc, we cannot expect 100% attendance at every session. Personal fitness is your own responsibility, but these sessions will help. Don’t worry if you’re feeling a bit flabby right now – the early sessions will be ‘accessible to all’. Just don’t leave it until August and think you can reach a level of fitness which will see you through the season – one of the reasons we suffered so many injuries last time around.

See you Tuesday!
