Belsize Park featured on Rugby Nats

What a whirlwind month for the club being featured on the England homepage again and having a special episode by the team at Rugby Nats focusing on us. Also a cheeky page in the Daily Mail!

Make sure you have a look at their website here http://www.rugbynats.co.uk and look at some of the great work other clubs are doing.

BELSIZE AWARDS CEREMONY DINNER DANCE – 17th June

Date:  Saturday 17 June 18:30 to Sunday 1:00
Location:  Cumberland Hotel, Great Cumberland Place W1H 7DL
Dinner: 3 Courses
Entertainment:  DJ and dancing
Dress:  Black Tie
Cost: £80 per person

Mark your calendars and dust off your dinner jackets for the Annual Belsize Awards and Dinner Dance (and Chairman’s speech).

This year our end of year extravaganza will be held at The Cumberland hotel near Marble Arch.  The posh hotel venue will include a DJ and dancing in the expectation that you will bring your wives and girlfriends to the event.

We have made some improvements in order to make the event more WAG friendly and a bit less of a sausage-fest.  We will be staying at the venue throughout the evening and the bar will be open until 1 am (thus avoiding the experience of previous years when we have been turfed out after the dinner and been refused entry anywhere else}.  The Board and Social Committee are trying to offer a civilized affair to which you can confidently bring your WAGS.

Join your team mates in celebrating another amazing season for Belsize and the many accomplishments and contributions that got us there.

To purchase tickets contact the following table captains who will collect your payment.

Belsize Invicta but in a civilized way, with dinner and girls and dancing (and a Chairman’s speech)

Christmas Message from the Chairman

All,Tidings of the season to all Belsize men, women and all your families.

2015 has brought highs and lows. Another successful end to last season, and more silverware and promotions for some of the league sides, with the others knocking on the door of the same. In the current season, the run of form, which is now 4 or 5 years old, continues and all league teams are performing strongly. The Bulls continue be a force on the London rugby social scene. April 2016 therefore promises to be a very big month for us, as long as we remain committed to the greater glory of Belsize.

As always there have been new recruits and several departures, none more so than Ben Keogh, who has gone to the great tour in the sky. Hopefully Gandalf and others are having as much fun as the tourists to Barbados, our first trip across the Atlantic for several years. We were also visited by old friends who returned to London to watch the World Cup, including in our new home at the White Mustache. Perhaps the greatest achievement of 2015 is that the World Cup didn’t prove to be the destruction of the club’s playing activities it has been in years past, and was a sign of our current position as central London’s top amateur club.

We have always considered that as our territory, but with 5 regular sides all performing well, several hundred members all contributing to the club’s general well being, and our touring and social reputation it cannot reasonably be argued by any of our competitors. We are regularly asked how we are doing it, especially when rugby clubs have been struggling in recent years. To me the answer is simple. A rugby club is a lot more than people playing rugby. It ought to be a community and if anyone spends 10 minutes looking at phone or email contacts, or friends on Facebook you’ll find that this is the biggest community you are part of.

Thank you all for your service to Belsize and each other, in whatever form, in 2015.

I hope everyone has a top class Christmas and New Year.

Murphy

Chairman’s Christmas Message

Men and Women of Belsize

There is one more weekend of rugby until the short mid season break for Christmas. At this time of year I usually send a message outlining our recent achievements, and highlighting how in the past months we have reached heights never previously dreamed of. This is no longer the case.

As you will all know, on the pitch our success continues, with all league teams doing very well and either leading or pushing for the top. As these are leagues we have never reached before this is superb, but instead of these being achievements that we never thought we could achieve, these are now things that we have come to expect. Our expectations have been raised again and again, and every victory in the past few years has been built upon to the point where we all wake in the morning expecting to win, not hoping.

The same is true off the pitch, both on the financial and social sides, where we are stronger than we have ever been.

This isn’t to suggest that there should be any room for complacency, as success on and off the pitch is the product of hard work. It simply means that we can all relax this Christmas, and enjoy a few drinks and a bit of cake, in the knowledge that the graft is paying off.

It also means that we can come back in the New Year, energised for the fight and ready to tackle the challenges that a club of our size, and current stature, face. The massive target we have painted on our backs is one. More hard work, and the confidence in our ability that it has engendered, means that this should be a small mountain to climb and that more laurels await us in April.

Let’s therefore do all we can to ensure that we get to have another massive club day in April to celebrate the effort that everyone has put in. A smaller group will then jet off to represent Belsize at the frontier of world class touring, as always. I believe there are some cricketers joining us in Barbados so not only the pride of our club but the pride of our sport will urge us to win that particular party.

Thank you all for the effort and dedication you have shown to Belsize in 2014. Have a happy Christmas and New Year.

Belsize Clean Sweep

Last weekend saw the second and final club day of the preseason with four teams taking to the field in Dulwich against Old Alleynians. Belsize fielded 79 players in an afternoon that saw another clean sweep for the central Londoners. The 1st XV ran out 38 – 14 victors, the 2nds 104 – 5, the thirds 41 – 17 and the fourths completed the rout 31- 22.
The Belsize attacking flair was evident across the board as free flowing rugby lead to the tries rained in from all areas.

BP warming up

Sterner challenges await next week as the 1s(away) and 2s(home) begin their league campaigns against Grasshoppers, the 3s(home) have friendly against Old Actonians 2s, the 4s(home) play British Airways before they make their league debut the following week and the 5s are due to make their seasonal debut.

We are now taking availability for games next Saturday. Given the league sides have restricted squad sizes, we will be ready to find a 5th team game a week early if numbers dictate.
Please complete the online availability form here to let us know if you can/can’t play: http://tiny.cc/Belsize_Availability

If you can’t access it because of firewalls, etc then send in an email to this address with something like the following in the subject line, by Wednesday 9am:

Zach Webb/Available/Hooker or Prop/No Car/07706 123456

i.e. Your name, your availability, your position, phone number and whether or not you’ve a car.

Also, a few of you are still only confirming availability with coaches or captains, given the need for myself & Mark O’Brien to have quick visibility on numbers to gauge the amount of games we need, this has to stop ASAP.
Please use the online form or email to let us know if you are around.

Season Opener v East London RFC

We have a fantastic club day lined up for this Saturday, acting as the culmination of the past two months of hard pre-season training.

We have three matches scheduled and despite many players still being away on holidays, we have almost 80 players to pick from. Thus, the aim is to give everyone a run, easing you back into full-contact rugby, and for coaches to have a look at all players.

The games have been timed to allow for certain players to cover key positions in two matches. Please make sure you double check to see if your name is down in more than one squad.

Please do remember that if you make yourself available you should do everything in your power to play. The details for all games are listed below.

After the match we expect to be entertained well by our hosts, who have hired a karaoke machine for the evening, so we’ll be showing the oppo how we win the party. We shall also welcome all our new joiners (if all goes to plan, we have 21 new caps this Saturday) so clear your diaries for the evening, make every effort to stay for East London’s hospitality and also enjoy some beers with any new team mates.

Belsize Invicta!
